General Education and Degree Requirements



College Seminar Class Requirement

All first-time degree-seeking students will take Freshman Seminar (BLUE 0101 ).

EXEMPTIONS:

  • A student already has a college degree.
  • A student is non-degree seeking and is only taking a course (or courses) for the purpose of transferring to another institution.
  • A student is from another institution and is only enrolling in summer courses.
  • A student is only enrolled in Wellness, Workforce Development, or refresher courses.
  • A transfer student with 30 or more college credit hours.
  • A student successfully completed a Freshman Orientation course at an accredited college or university.
  • Students taking Honors Tutorial I as Presidential Scholarship recipients.
  • A student is earning an AAS degree or Certificate in a program from which this course has been exempted.

If a student does not meet one of the exemptions listed above and wishes to appeal the requirement of completing the course, the student will need to obtain the approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

General Education Vision Statement

To lay a broad foundation for students’ education and develop the skills necessary for participation in a free and democratic society, the KCKCC General Education program endeavors to enhance students’ understanding of language and communication, to improve the quality of their reading and writing, to develop analytical and critical thinking skills, to deepen their awareness of our national and global heritage and interconnections and foster lifelong learning.

The following General Education Learning Outcomes and Institutional Learning Outcomes have been developed by Kansas City Kansas Community College faculty. All students are expected to be proficient in these learning outcomes with the attainment of a degree.

Institutional Learning Outcomes

COMMUNICATION LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will express, interpret, and modify ideas/information (both written and oral), including but not limited to reading text accurately and correctly; writing and speaking with a clear purpose and organization; using appropriate communication styles that suit the message, purpose, and context; and employing active listening techniques.

COMPUTATION AND FINANCIAL LITERACY LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will understand and apply mathematical concepts and reasoning using numerical data and demonstrate knowledge of financial concepts and skills.

CRITICAL REASONING LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will distinguish between inductive and deductive reasoning; evaluate sources for credibility and accuracy; define problems; engage with varied perspectives; recognize logical fallacies; distinguish between and apply qualitative and quantitative data; and develop complex decisions and arguments utilizing analysis, synthesis, and evaluation skills.

TECHNOLOGY AND INFORMATION LITERACY LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will define, collect, organize, evaluate, and apply information from a variety of sources and formats both online and in person; understand basic technology concepts and functionality to locate, retrieve, synthesize, and disseminate information; and demonstrate the ethical and legal use of information and the socioeconomic issues regarding information.

COMMUNITY AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will engage with ideas, perspectives, and aesthetic expressions from diverse communities with sensitivity and recognition of the ethical issues and values of connecting with and contributing to society.

PERSONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will work cooperatively and productively with others in a variety of contexts including but not limited to small group and team settings; understand and evaluate their capabilities; manage their personal and professional growth by setting realistic and appropriate goals; and effectively manage both face-to-face and mediated communication and relationships.

General Education Core Requirements

General education core requirements vary based on the degree the student is seeking. Please see the degree plan for the desired degree to determine the required general education coursework. Minimum requirements are as follows:

  • Associate in Science: 32 hours of general education coursework
  • Associate in Arts: 33 hours of general education coursework
  • Associate in General Studies: 27 hours of general education coursework
  • Associate in Applied Science: 15 hours of general education coursework

Students are sometimes given an opportunity to select a class of interest. In this case, students must make their selection from the list of General Education core courses below. If the student has a question about a course that is not listed here, the student should contact an advisor or program coordinator/director in the major area of interest to determine if the course will satisfy the requirement.

KCKCC general education requirements are considered fulfilled after submission and posting of relevant credits from an official transcript indicating the completion of an Associate in Arts degree, Associate in Science degree, Baccalaureate degree or above from a regionally accredited college or university. Specialized programs may require enrollment in and completion general education courses to fulfill accreditation requirements. The student should contact an advisor or program coordinator/director in the major area of interest to determine what courses may be required for degree completion.

Kansas Board of Regents Transfer and Articulation

The Kansas Board of Regents has approved and faculty representatives from Kansas public postsecondary institutions have agreed upon the learning outcomes for a variety of system wide transfer courses. A full list of these courses may be found at https://www.kansasregents.org/academic_affairs/transfer-articulation. A student who completes an approved KCKCC course will be able to transfer the course to any Kansas public postsecondary institution offering an equivalent course.

Degree Requirements

To earn an Associate degree, students must complete a minimum of 60 academic credit hours and meet all degree requirement as outlined in the KCKCC catalog.

Students who maintain a consecutive enrollment and successfully complete at least one class during each semester (excluding Summer Sessions) must complete the degree requirements for the academic year they applied to and were accepted at KCKCC.

Students who have interrupted their enrollment for two or more consecutive semesters must re-apply to KCKCC and complete the degree requirements indicated in the current catalog.

With approval of the Program Coordinator or Academic Dean, students may opt to forfeit the degree/certificate requirements associated with their current (older) catalog year; to follow the new degree/certificate requirements outlined a newer catalog. Students are NOT allowed to revert to a previous catalog.

Associate In Arts Degree In Liberal Arts And Sciences Degree

ANTICIPATED PROGRAM LENGTH FOR A STUDENT ATTENDING FULL TIME IS 24 MONTHS.

The Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of academic work with a cumulative grade-point average of not less than “C” (2.0). Candidates for this degree must present an organized program of study, which meets the following 33 hours of general education core requirements. Authority for substitutions must be obtained from the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The AA degree is designed for students to transfer with advanced standing into university bachelor’s degrees. The courses are comparable to lower division courses offered at Kansas Regents Universities. Developmental courses cannot be used to fulfill degree requirements.

Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that students intending to transfer to a four-year institution consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisor before enrolling to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the transfer requirements established by his/her transfer institution.

It is the responsibility of the student to know and observe the requirements of his/her curriculum and the rules governing academic work. Although the student’s advisor will attempt to help the student make wise decisions, the ultimate responsibility for meeting the requirements rests with the student.

Candidates for this degree must present an organized program of study, which meets the following 32 hours of general education core requirements. Authority for substitutions must be obtained from the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Associate In Applied Science In Applied Technologies Degree

ANTICIPATED PROGRAM LENGTH FOR A STUDENT ATTENDING FULL TIME IS 24 MONTHS.

An Associate in Applied Science in Applied Technologies Degree requires a satisfactory completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours of academic work, not to exceed 68 credit hours, with a cumulative grade-point average of not less than “C” (2.0). Candidates for this degree must present an organized program of study, which meets the following 15 hours of general education core requirements.

The primary intent of this degree is to prepare students for employment. Students are expected to follow the degree requirements developed by the College’s advisory committee and approved by the State. Any deviation from the authorized program must be accompanied by the coordinator/director/lead instructor and approved by the Division Dean and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that students intending to transfer to a four-year institution consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisor before enrolling to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the transfer requirements established by his/her transfer institution.

An Associate in General Studies Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours and a C (2.00) cumulative grade-point average. Candidates for this degree must present an organized program of study, which meets the following 27 hours of general education core requirements. Authority for substitutions must be obtained from the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Since the transferability of courses will vary depending on the specific four-year institution, it is strongly recommended that students intending to transfer to a four-year institution consult with the transfer institution and with their respective KCKCC advisor before enrolling to determine the transferability of their courses. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the transfer requirements established by his/her transfer institution.

Second Associate Degree

Students seeking a second degree must complete a minimum of 15 additional credit hours at the College between the first and second degree and meet all the requirements for the second degree. Students are eligible for honors if the course work taken for the second degree meets honor requirements. Students must file intent to pursue a certificate and degree in the Student Success Center prior to application for graduation. If eligible, a student will be awarded a certificate and degree in the same semester. No more than one degree will be awarded per semester.

Certificate Programs

ANTICIPATED PROGRAM LENGTH FOR A STUDENT ATTENDING FULL TIME IS 11 MONTHS.

The primary intent of the certificate programs is to prepare students for employment following one year of study. Students are expected to follow the degree requirements developed by the College’s advisory committee and approved by the State. Any deviation from the authorized program must be accompanied by the coordinator/director/lead instructor and approved by the Division Dean and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Students seeking a certificate from the College must meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain a cumulative 2.00 or better grade-point average.
  • Complete their last 10 credit hours at KCKCC.
